Pieter Romenij was a great admirer of the still life painters of the 17th Century, this shows clearly in his precisely wielding of his brush. His power of expression in the texture of the grapes and the peaches with the subtle dewdrops, the skin of the pumpkin, it all indicates that he mastered the traditional techniques. Yet the at will displayed fruits are typical for his own time. Born in Zwolle May 7th 1830 Pieter Romenij died in Arnhem June 25th 1898. Although he lived in several places throughout The Netherlands and Belgium, he lived the greatest part of his life in Wageningen and Zwolle. In the mid-19th Century his works were frequently exhibited throughout the main cities of Holland.
